Built-in beats portable for a simple reason: it is designed into the surface, sized to the seating around it, and finished in materials that match the rest of the hardscape instead of sitting on top of it. Placement is the part homeowners underestimate — clearance from structures and furniture, prevailing wind so smoke leaves rather than circulates, and enough paved area around the feature that chairs are not balanced half on the grass.

Residential Hardscaping

Residential hardscaping is where the design work and the structural work have to agree with each other.

On a home project, the constraints are real: an existing pool, a mature oak you are not removing, an HOA that has opinions about materials, and a grade that already sends water somewhere. Good hardscape design works inside those, using walls to make a slope usable, using material changes to separate a dining area from a walkway, and planning approvals into the schedule instead of discovering them halfway through.

Nearly every hardscape we are called in to rescue failed for one of these reasons, and none of them are about the material that was chosen.

• No single plan. Elements added one at a time produce mismatched materials and elevations that never quite line up.
• Drainage treated as an afterthought. Water is the thing that destroys hardscapes — Florida's climate punishes any surface that ponds or sheds toward a foundation.
• Base work skipped where it does not show. Compaction under a patio is invisible on day one and decisive by year three.
• Walls built without drainage detailing. Most failed retaining walls fail from water pressure behind them, not the weight above.
